Archer adds GB string to his bow
By Paul Alton First published Thursday 3rd May 2007
ARCHER George Fenton is setting his sights on success after receiving his first call-up into the Great Britain junior team.

The 17-year-old Billericay student has been selected to represent GB at the European Outdoor Target Championships in the Algarve, Portugal, this summer.
"It will be a fantastic experience for him," said proud dad Stephen. "He is very keen and wants to do well in Portugal". Fenton, a student at Billericay School sixth form college made the grade after a gruelling weekend's shoot at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire.
The weekend started with a Gents' FITA where he shot over 90 metres, 70 metres, 50 metres and 30 metres.
Fenton shot 36 arrows at each distance, with the latter two distances featuring smaller targets. He then moved on to the Gents' FITA 720, where competitors fired 72 arrows at 70 metres.

The selection weekend ended with a round-robin tournament consisting of 15 matches where archers shot 12 arrows at 70 metres in each.
It is Fenton's first call to the GB team, although he has been on the squad since February when he competed in a selection shoot for the World Indoor event. The teenager took up the sport seven years ago when he attended the Mayflower Archers' come-and-try stall at the Barleylands Steam Rally weekend. Fenton is still a member of the Billericay-based club and has subsequently shot for Essex before coming to the attention of the GB team.

Archery: Essex claim trio of gongs at regionals

Essex completed a clean sweep when the county hosted the Southern Area Regional Championship. Tom Purser (Mayflower Archers) claimed the men's title and Gillian Willcox (Rayleigh Town) took the ladies' crown at Runwell Sports and Social Club. Purser teamed up with club-mate Michael Markham and Rayleigh Town pair Clair Tayeg and Harry Hayne to form the Essex team that beat 13 others to the best county title. "Essex did very well, with Billericay's Mayflower Archers getting 12 medals and Rayeigh Town 22," said Rayleigh Town chief John Willson. "We were also celebrating because Clair Tayeg and Craig Quantrill had just passed their AS level in archery the week beforehand."

Archery: Force is with JEDI
There will be plenty of JEDI nights and days for Essex archers following the launch of a new scheme. The Junior Essex Development Initiative (JEDI) aims to coach promising archers to compete at international standard.
"We are the first county in England to do this," said John Willson, who is organising the sessions at the Deanes Sports College in Daws Heath Road, Thundersley. "This initiative is to take the juniors of Essex to a higher standard and hopefully bring them up to the standard for selection for county and ultimately Great Britain squads."
Rayleigh Town Archery Club coach John will be working with senior coaches John Neil and Mitch Vaughan on JEDI. John has also recently been picked by the Grand National Archery Society as the co-ordination and development officer for a scheme to develop archery at sports colleges throughout England. The plan is to link clubs to the country's 161 sports colleges in the same way Rayleigh Town and Deanes have.
