About Us & Membership

About us

Established in 1988, Mayflower Archers has grown to be one of the largest archery clubs in Essex. We have access to our own outdoor shooting ground that is available seven days a week and a gymnasium and sports hall for winter shooting at Mayflower School. Our archers have the support of a qualified coaching team and many experienced archers that have shot at National and International levels.

The club was formed following a series of evening classes run by an existing keen archer and Coach, Mr Frank Flaherty. Since then the club has grown to be the largest in Essex with over 140 members. We have a thriving Junior section and we have seen both seniors and juniors represented in County, Regional, National and International teams.

We cater for all archers, both experienced and those that have never picked up a bow before, from the age of 10 upwards. Archery is a family sport and we are fortunate to have a number of family members within the club that makes for a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

Beginners Courses in Archery

We run a beginners course each year in March, usually over three Saturday mornings at our indoor venue at Mayflower School. An outdoor beginners courses may be held and details will be posted in advance.

Archers who have had basic training in the past and have belonged to another club, are usually able to join without undergoing a further beginners course, simply complete the application at the foot of this page and tell us where you have gained your previous experience.

Mayflower Juniors

Mayflower Juniors took their name from the Mayflower School in Billericay when it was formed in the 1990's by founder member Ken Gray.  Ken's first members were drawn from children of adult members of Mayflower Archers and with its ever increasing popularity, the group soon established an enviable reputation. Before long, the club was opened to youngsters from all over Essex. Today, Mayflower Juniors enjoy outstanding countywide success at the annual Junior County Championships.

Mayflower Juniors has many GNAS approved coaches who teach to the very highest standards of Britain's fastest growing pastime. We observe the strictest codes of health and safety, and all members are given individual attention.

Open to juniors aged between ten and eighteen years old, the club shoots outdoors during the summer, with indoor meetings throughout the winter months.

Club days

Our outdoor venue is at Barleylands farm in Billericay. We have access to our field, seven days a week with Club days being Wednesday evening, Saturday and Sunday. Our Junior Club meets Saturday afternoons between 2:00pm and 4:00pm under the guidance of our club coaches. During the warmer weather, you will generally find some members shooting at the field most evenings during the week.
